Musical Journey
Starting his musical journey at age four, Ira honed his craft studying jazz and classical performance at the University of Southern Maine and William Paterson University. His passion soon gravitated toward the Hammond organ, an instrument he describes as "such a living instrument—it growls, it breathes, it cries. There's nothing like it." Drawing inspiration from legends like Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Ray Charles, Jimmy Smith, Eddie Palmieri, and John Scofield, Ira has forged a style all his own, earning a reputation as an in-demand A-list performer. Vermont's Music Community
Since making Vermont his home, Ira has become a cornerstone of the region's vibrant music community. He leads his own projects—including the Ira Friedman Band, Organ Donor, and the Ira Friedman Trio—and is a founding member of the original funk/soul band Soul Porpoise, whose grooves are steeped in funk, jazz, and world rhythms. Ira's original compositions, performed by Soul Porpoise, are heartfelt reflections on life, delivered with infectious energy and airtight grooves. His long-running partnership with Dave Keller has taken him across the U.S. and Europe, contributing to three Blues Music Nominations and earning four-star reviews from Downbeat. Esteemed artists like Bernie Worrell, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Johnny Rawls, James Montgomery, Kenny Neal, Carly Harvey, and Joe Louis Walker have all shared the stage with Ira, drawn to his riveting live performances and soulful presence.
